Music Director
Spencer is the Director of Music at St Edmund's School, where he leads both the Symphony Orchestra, Chapel Choir and the Choral Society. A gifted pianist, he studied under internationally renowned concert pianist Ronald Smith, and holds a master's degree with distinction alongside performance diplomas in piano and organ from the Royal College of Music, Trinity College, and the Royal College of Organists.
Under his direction, recent performances have included a diverse and ambitious repertoire: Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, The Wasps Overture by Vaughan Williams, Mont Juic by Britten and Berkeley, Mozart's Violin Concerto in A Major, Beethoven's Coriolan Overture, Chilcott's Requiem, and Haydn's Nelson Mass.
Spencer has a particular passion for Baroque harmony and counterpoint, as well as the Romantic piano repertoire. Although classically trained as a soloist, much of his professional life is dedicated to teaching, accompanying, coaching, and examining – both in the UK and internationally. His work also includes numerous recordings as a pianist and organist.
He serves as Chairman of the Senior Piano Section at the Kent Festival, is a
committee member of the European Piano Teachers Association (EPTA) and
examines A Level Music Performance. Occasionally, you'll also find him singing as a Deputy Lay Clerk at Canterbury Cathedral.
Outside of music, Spencer is a keen walker and enjoys cooking, and travel.
